Basquiat (1960-1980) was an American artist. Initially starting as a graffiti artist, Basquiat grew into a phenomenon that incorporated concepts of alienation and identity within a matrix of mixed media. An African-American, Basquiat also represented black culture in his works. Highly desirable, his work is often viewed in a more intellectual and Modern context than his contemporaries- a bit more Cy Twombly than Andy Warhol (with whom he collaborated in the 1980s).
